How it works

Price = labor (hours × rate) + materials × (1 + markup), plus tax if you charge it. The calculator also shows the margin that markup gives you, and the deposit at the percentage you choose. Check your state's deposit limit before you send it.

Tax rules vary: some states tax materials only, some tax labor too. Use the rate that applies to your job.

Using the numbers

  • Your hourly rate should already cover overhead and profit. If you're not sure it does, work it out with how to calculate your hourly rate.
  • Markup isn't margin. A 25% markup on materials is a 20% margin. The calculator shows both so you don't confuse them; see markup vs margin.
  • Deposits have legal limits in some states, such as California's $1,000 or 10%, whichever is less. See how much deposit to ask for.
How do I calculate a price for a contracting job?

Multiply labor hours by your hourly rate, add materials with your markup, and add sales tax if it applies. Example: 6 hours at $85 is $510; $400 of materials at 25% markup is $500; the price before tax is $1,010.

What markup should I put on materials?

It depends on your trade and market. Remember that markup is a percentage of cost: a 25% markup keeps 20% of the selling price.

Does this calculator save my numbers?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
