Quick answer

A plumbing estimate needs your business details and license number, the customer and job address, one line per task and material with quantity and price, the total, any deposit, what is excluded, and a place to approve. The template below is the generic contractor estimate pre-filled with a plumbing job so you can see what good looks like, plus the exclusions plumbers most often forget. It's free, printable, and there's no sign-up.

Exclusions to put on every plumbing estimate

  • Customer-supplied fixture; no warranty on the fixture itself.
  • Does not include repair of corroded or damaged pipe found behind the wall or under the floor.
  • Shutoff valve replaced only if it fails to close; billed at $45 if needed.
  • Permit fee billed at cost if the city requires one.

Terms that fit plumbing work

Valid for 30 days. Work found behind walls or under floors is quoted before it continues. Balance due on completion by card, bank transfer or check.

What matters in plumbing estimates

  • Say who supplies the fixture. A customer-supplied toilet, faucet or water heater changes your warranty and your markup. Put it on the line.
  • Price what you can't see as an exclusion. Corroded pipe behind the wall is the number-one plumbing argument. One sentence in the exclusions box ends it before it starts.
  • Put haul-away on its own line. Disposal is work. When it's a line item the customer sees it and doesn't ask why the total is higher than the fixture price.
  • Permits. Water heaters and repipes often need one, and the rules vary by city. A "permit fee at cost" line keeps you honest without guessing the number.
