Why contractors look for a Square Invoices alternative
Online payments have to run through Square
NerdWallet's review notes that Square Invoices requires Square's in-house processing to accept online payments, so your payments sit inside Square's account rules. With Settle the payment goes to your own Stripe account.
A documented history of reserves on some accounts
ITPro reported in 2020 that Square was withholding up to 30% of funds from some small businesses, and sellers have posted similar cases in Square's community forum since. Any processor, Stripe included, can hold funds when its risk checks trip. The difference with Settle is that Settle itself is never holding them.
Features move up the tiers
Square's invoice plans put features such as payment schedules and custom templates on the paid Plus tier. Reviewers describe being charged for features one by one.
"Nickel and dime you for every feature."Square Invoices reviewer, CapterraWhen Square Invoices is the better choice
- You already use Square hardware or Square POS and want everything in one place.
- You want a free plan with a web dashboard, plus Android.
- You take card-present payments (tap, chip) in addition to invoices. Settle only takes payments through the link.
When Settle is not the right app
We would rather you know before you download:
- iPhone only. There is no Android app and no web app.
- No scheduling, dispatching, GPS or time tracking.
- No QuickBooks sync. You can export everything to CSV.
- One user per account. No crew or team logins.
- Documents live on your phone. There is no sync between devices yet.
- English only for now.
- A new app from a small team. Most of the apps it competes with have been around for years.
How to switch from Square Invoices
Square's community pages describe exporting invoices and estimates to CSV from the Square Dashboard (select Export, after filtering the list). Export before you close anything.
There is nothing to import into Settle. Open the app, tap the orange button, and describe your next job. Your own prices are remembered from what you send, so your old price list doesn't need to come along.
